Ensuring Compliance,
Inspiring Confidence.
Sue Berry, Compliance Officer, began her career in administration in 1987, working in the corporate offices of a multi-campus chain of schools and hair salons after earning her Bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University. She joined GEMCOR in 2011, bringing her extensive experience to the field of Federal Student Aid administration. In this unique and ever-evolving industry, Sue’s role has grown alongside her skills in program management, organization, and client support. Her professionalism is matched by her patience and compassion, which she brings to every client interaction—especially when guiding them through complex and often painstaking compliance obligations.
As a Compliance Officer, Sue is responsible for conducting periodic file reviews to confirm student eligibility for FSA funds based on documentation provided by schools. Working collaboratively with institutions, she helps ensure that on-campus processes are performed in a compliant and consistent manner. In addition to file reviews, Sue provides expert support with verification and C code resolution, and offers technical assistance with GEMCOR’s secure document portal, ShareFile. Sue also plays a critical role in the timely and accurate updating of bi-monthly Enrollment Roster Reporting for the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). Her deep understanding of NSLDS—a centralized database that tracks Title IV loans and grants throughout their lifecycle—makes her an invaluable resource for maintaining compliance with federal regulations. Whether it’s aid approval, disbursement, repayment, or closure, Sue is a skilled navigator of the NSLDS system and a trusted partner to GEMCOR’s clients.
What Sue enjoys most about her work is building meaningful relationships with clients—engaging with them, guiding them through complex processes, and ensuring they feel truly valued. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends, and occasionally enjoys a round of golf. Her favorite part about working at GEMCOR is the people: Don, who she describes as the best boss hands-down, her supportive team of co-workers, and the incredible clients she serves. Sue is proud of her 35-year marriage and the close bond she shares with her three adult children, who still love spending time and vacationing with her. Clients working with Sue can expect a dedicated partner who is genuinely committed to finding solutions and providing accurate, helpful information. She values the collaborative nature of client relationships, viewing them as true partnerships in the ever-changing world of financial aid. Sue also fondly remembers the Chicago Blackhawks limousine trips Don organized for the team at Christmas—some of her favorite memories at GEMCOR. Her ideal morning starts simply: with a strong cup of black coffee and a readiness to help.
